Anemia affects about 3.5 million Americans, most of them being women. Anemia is when the body lacks enough red blood cells. When your blood cells are also lacking in hemoglobin then your body is not receiving the iron that it needs.

Symptoms include fatigue, headaches, nosebleeds, and dizzy spells. What happens is that your body is not getting enough oxygen. Anemia is the most common blood condition in the US.

Some forms of anemia are genetic and the person can have it since birth. Women who have heavy menstrual cycles are usually at high risk. The constant loss of blood contributes to the anemia. Women who have an irregular menstrual cycle are also at risk.

The most common form of anemia is treatable with supplements and change in diet. Other forms may stay around longer and cause more serious health problems such as leukemia.

There are 3 common ways of becoming anemic. The first is caused by blood loss. Red blood cells lost through bleeding over a long period of time are usually hard to detect. Excessive menstrual bleeding or through ulcers and cancer also cause anemia.

Another way is caused by lack of red blood cell production. Conditions associated with that kind of anemia is sickle cell anemia, Iron deficiency, and other health conditions along with bone marrow and stem cell problems. It can also occur if your body is lacking vitamin B12 and folate. Those 2 vitamins are needed to produce red blood cells.

To reassure that you are getting all of the nutrients and vitamins needed to keep you healthy make sure you include the following foods in your diet. Legumes such as lentils are a great source of Iron along with black eyed peas, navy beans, pinto beans, lima beans, kidney beans and chick peas. Chick peas have one of the highest content of Iron between the legumes. Tofu is high in Iron along with dark green vegetables like Spinach. Broccoli, Watermelon, Green bean, potato, beet greens, and tomato juice are also good sources.

Bran flakes and oatmeal are the best sources for Iron. Aloe Vera is a great vegetarian source of B12. Juice it with some of the vegetables and fruit listed above to get the best results. You can make a lentil soup with tomato juice, spinach, onions or make a 5 bean salsa. The recipes are endless and very healthy for you and your blood. Include those in your daily diet and feel better about anemia.
